reproduction
Anatomy.

Every reproductive technology works with the same set of structures. Know the structures, and the rest starts to make sense.

The Female Tract

From ovary to vulva — where it all happens.

The female tract produces the egg, provides the meeting place for sperm and oocyte, and carries the pregnancy. The structures below follow the path an oocyte takes — from where it develops to the outside of the body.

01

Ovaries

Follicles • Oocytes • Corpus Luteum

The ovaries produce oocytes and the hormones that run the reproductive cycle. Follicles on the ovary grow, produce estrogen, and release an oocyte at ovulation. The follicle then becomes a corpus luteum, which produces progesterone.

02

Oviducts

Infundibulum • Ampulla • Isthmus

Two small, coiled tubes that link each ovary to its uterine horn. The funnel-shaped infundibulum catches the oocyte at ovulation, fertilization takes place in the ampulla, and the early embryo travels down the oviduct for several days before reaching the uterus.

03

Uterus & Uterine Horns

Uterine Body • Horns • Caruncles • Endometrium

The cow’s uterus has a short body and two long, curving horns, and the pregnancy develops in one of the horns. The uterine lining has raised attachment points called caruncles, where the placenta connects. The uterus also produces PGF₂α, the signal that ends the cycle when no pregnancy is present.

04

Cervix

Cervical Rings • Mucus • Barrier

A firm, thick-walled passage between the vagina and the uterus. Its ring-like folds keep the uterus sealed off, especially during pregnancy. Around heat, the cervix relaxes slightly and produces mucus. It’s also the structure that has to be navigated during artificial insemination and embryo transfer.

05

Vagina

Copulatory Organ • Birth Canal

The muscular canal between the cervix and the vulva. In natural service, the bull deposits semen in the front of the vagina near the cervix. With AI, semen is instead placed past the cervix, directly into the uterus.

06

Vulva

External Structure • Heat Signs

The external opening of the reproductive tract. Its appearance changes during the cycle: around heat, the vulva often looks swollen and reddened and may show clear mucus. That makes it one of the visual clues used in heat detection.

Structure Meets Timing

Anatomy tells you where. The cycle tells you when.

These structures don’t work on their own. Hormones and the estrous cycle decide when follicles grow, when ovulation happens, and when the uterus is ready for a pregnancy. That’s the next part of the library.
